* The NSRC Fund board of directors established these and the following Named Funds in the hope that what happened during World War II will never be forgotten, and also that future generations will continue to have the opportunity to receive a higher education:

In 1996, Mayme Noda shared the following reflections regarding why she established the Livingston Yamato Colony Pioneers Named Fund.

I grew up in the Yamato Colony, an intentional farm settlement established in California in 1906. The community was a wonderful place to grow up, though it was restricting in some ways. It was difficult yet wonderful. All the children of the community knew each other very well. Age didn't matter so much. We knew everybody. I have wonderful memories ? swimming in the irrigation canals, playing baseball at dusk, the annual picnic that we all looked forward to, the community movies.

I have tremendous respect for the Issei pioneers who established the community. They were so aware, so Japanese. They were people with a vision who really wanted the best for their children. The first kindergarten in the area was established by the Issei because they wanted their children to learn English. If it had not been for the pioneers, there would have been no kindergarten for anyone ? the children in the community or the white children in the nearby town.

The Issei tried really hard to get along with the people of the white community, to integrate their children well. They protected us the best they could from the kind of prejudices everyone ran into in those days. They were so aware of children's needs, they even built a tennis court for us! We all learned to play tennis. And for them it was given that everyone would get an education beyond high school ? perhaps not university or college, but some kind of education.

In establishing the Livingston Yamato Colony Pioneers Named Fund, I wanted to commemorate and remember many things. I wanted to remember our parents and how they struggled for the sake of their children. If we had not gotten the encouragement we received from them, we certainly couldn't have gone forward in our lives the way we have. I really needed to show my appreciation to our parents and to the upbringing they gave to us.

I also wanted to keep the name of the community itself alive. I am afraid that the community is going to die. We are now in the fourth generation of children, the yonsei, and I can't imagine these children coming back to the farms. I wanted to keep the community alive in memory.

Finally, I gave to the NSRC Fund because I wanted to help others as our parents helped us. The Issei struggled for their children ? not for themselves ? wanting to give their children every chance for an education and a better life. I want to commemorate that spirit and love and vision. I want to help give other opportunities like we had.
